About Us
We are Alisa and Bruce, a married couple who have been creating, teaching, and building art communities together for more than thirty years.
Our story began in Los Angeles in 1999 when we opened our first art school, Art Works. Each week more than one hundred people joined us for drawing and painting classes. It was a lively, creative space where people of all levels came to learn and grow with the right guidance and support.
After ten years, we decided to take a leap. We sold the business, our house, and most of what we owned, and moved to the countryside in southwest France. There we created Raison d’Art, where we coordinated and ran ten day fine art retreats for all levels. Guests stayed with us in our farmhouse surrounded by life and color. Days began in the studio sketching and planning, and then we would either continue working there or head out to paint in a field of sunflowers or a quiet medieval village. We often laughed that we actually lived inside a painting. We ate together, laughed together, and created together.
In 2017 we moved to Barcelona and opened Arte Bar. Over the years thousands of people have joined our classes to learn how to paint or to reconnect with it after years away. We teach real art techniques in a relaxed, encouraging environment. Each class is guided from start to finish with clear instruction, step by step demonstrations, and personal support along the way. We make sure everyone feels welcome and proud of what they create.
Bruce has been painting and creating art since he was young. In high school his AP art teacher became a mentor and changed the direction of his life. He went on to study painting at the University of Arizona, where he deepened his understanding of composition, color, and technique. He has continued to create and explore new work throughout his career, combining decades of experience as both an artist and a teacher. His teaching style is calm, clear, and deeply practical, helping people understand not just what to do but why it works.
This year, after hearing from many people who wanted to learn from Bruce but could not attend a class in person, we decided to bring that same experience online. That is how the Painting of the Month Club began.
Each month, Bruce teaches a new painting in the same detailed, easy to follow way he does in the studio. You can learn at home on your own schedule, with clear lessons that build real skill and confidence. And if you ever need help or have questions, we are only an email away.
For us, teaching art has always been about more than the result. It is about helping people slow down, learn with clarity, and feel proud of what they can do.
